There he stands, awkward and anxious, the caddy masters orders still ringing in his ears. Does the sight before him beckon to him, the green fairway wandering down to the pear shaped green framed by white sand? Does he hear the sad cry of the mourning dove in the bushes behind him, or are a hundred worries tumbling through his young head?
He is probably wondering if he can manage the big bag on the trolley, and hoping he won't do anything to upset his patron. Where do I stand when he is hitting? Will I be able to find his ball if he puts it in the rough? What do I do on the green? Golf is such a funny game. It has so many rituals. Being a caddie is like being an altar boy. You have to know where and when to move. What if my golfer gets angry with me? I wonder how much he'll tip?
There he stands on a lovely summer's day, a youngster on the threshold of his own summer, eager, apprehensive, starting a new adventure. His first loop. Words by Jack Whitaker based on the painting "First Loop".
