Links courses, where the farmland meets the sea, offer some of the best vistas and venues to play golf. St. Andrews located on the north shore of Scotland, is considered the home of golf. It is no wonder that the tradition of building courses along these strips of land is so popular a choice. These barren scruffy parcels of land were often used for hunting and fishing as well as playing golf. I surmise that it would not have been unusual to hear a shotgun report while playing the links. Many golf clubs that were formed as the game grew, also offered the sport of shooting and fishing. It's my guess that is where the tradition of starting tournaments with the firing of a shotgun began. Who knows? But I think it makes for an interesting picture.
